Jimmy Freeman Won the Powerball Lottery
On June 8, 2011, Jimmy Freeman, a retired U.S. Navy civilian worker from Fall River, Massachusetts
won the $25.6 Million Powerball Jackpot price. Jimmy came forward to claim his jackpot just several hours after learning he won the $25.6 million prize in the June 8th Powerball drawing.
Freeman’s jackpot-winning Powerball ticket is the first sold in the state since the multi-state game was introduced to Massachusetts players in January 2010. His winning numbers: 14-37-44-45-53, PB 29, were selected by Quic Pic. Freeman said he plays a few dollars everyday around town, mostly Quic Pics, and he has always prayed and dreamed that he would someday win a big jackpot – today his dream came true.
Freeman arrived at the Lottery’s Braintree headquarters with his good friend Russ Gamson who called him at 7:30 am today urging him to check his Powerball tickets because the winning ticket was sold in Fall River. Once he realized that he had won, Freeman said, “Oh my God Russ, it’s me – I won the jackpot.”
Freeman opted to take the one-time, lump sum payment of $13.4 million (before taxes).
It will take approximately two weeks to process the multi-state prize payment. When Freeman receives his winnings, he told a pool of reporters that he planned on buying a car – “a Hyundai Elantra with a remote starter.”
The winning ticket was purchased at Joe’s Market located at 1132 Robeson Street in Fall River.
The store owner, Gunvantkumar Patel, will receive a $50,000 commission on the sale.
Patel said Thursday morning he had no idea who bought the ticket, but said was sure the fortune would go to a good and deserving person.
“I have wonderful customers,” Patel said. “I am so happy for whoever this is.”
Patel’s store, a fixture in the Highlands neighborhood, is a small variety store with rows of groceries, frozen dinners, milk, cream, soda and bread. Two rows in the back of the store offer beer and wine.
He has managed the store for the past six months since he bought it, with his family, and moved to the area from Harwich.
On Thursday Patel was working, as was his uncle, Ricky Patel. Patel’s wife and her mother, Mittal and Bhagvatiben Patel, arrived at the store with the Patel’s son Shan, age 11 months.
All but Shan wore a sticker from the Lottery that said “Play the Numbers.”
Bhagvatiben Patel wore hers on a golden sari made of silk.
